Choosing a Course

I eventually want my own label, but should I learn tailoring first or fashion designing?

Arun Kumar asks

A question we hear often
I am 27 and working in Bengaluru. Sewing started as a hobby, but now I am seriously thinking about creating my own clothes and selling them one day. I can do only basic stitching at the moment, so I am confused about which direction makes sense first.

ONSA's Answer

Wanting your own label this early is a good compass to have — most people figure that out much later. The honest answer depends on how solid your hands-on stitching already is: fashion designing courses assume you can already execute what you design, and if that foundation is shaky, the gap shows up in every garment you try to make. If tailoring still feels basic to you, strengthen that first — it'll make everything you learn about designing land better instead of staying theoretical. If you're already comfortable constructing garments, a broader designing course is probably the better next step for you specifically.
